Manzanita Beach House

Beach house that balances privacy and natural light

In the sleepy coast town of Manzanita, Oregon, the Scandinavian Plankhouse is nestled into sand dunes 3/4 of a mile from the Pacific Ocean. In order to address the primarily overcast days, large south west facing windows are being provided to maximize natural lighting and connect with the surrounding landscape - hills in the distance, pine trees in the foreground and coastal dunes throughout. For the harsh ocean climate Shou Sugi Ban burnt siding is being provided as the primary facade treatment. The vernacular plankhouse influenced the generous overhangs, elements of cedar shake siding, and plan layout which congregates communal spaces. Scandinavian design aesthetics - clean, simple forms, access to daylight, connection to nature will be incorporated into the interiors as well.
